Clean & Green: The Power of Baking Soda

Once you discover the simplicity of cleaning with baking soda you'll be hooked, I was. There are endless ways to use it all around your home plus your bank account will be very happy!

We started using it initially because it was nontoxic but now I've come to realize its quite economical. Last year I bought a bulk size from Costco (13.5 pds) which should last us for a couple of years. Heres a list of the the ways we've used it for cleaning and also some new ones I'll be trying.

General
Remove Carpet Odor: Shake baking soda over carpet before you go to bed, then vacuum it up in the morning to remove any lingering smells.

Remove Vacuum Cleaner Odor: Your vacuum cleaner canister can be deodorized using baking soda.  Add a small amount to the canister to eliminate stinky odors while vacuuming.

Deodorize Trash Cans: Just sprinkle some in the bottom of your cans when you change the bag. Occasionally rinse them out with hot water.

Clean Tile Floors: Poor ½ cup baking soda into a bucket of warm water, then mop and rinse.

Baby
Deodorize Baby Bottles: Fill bottle with warm water and add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Shake, rinse, and clean thoroughly.

Clean Baby Toys: Add 1/4 cup baking soda to 1 quart water then use the solution to wipe down toys, rinse, and dry.

Bath
Bathroom Floors: Mix ½ cup baking soda in a bucket of warm water, mop, and rinse.

Drains: To avoid clogged drains, pour 1/4 cup baking soda down weekly followed by hot water.

Toilets: Flush toilet, Pour 1 Cup of baking soda around the sides, leave overnight. Flush in the morning and scrub with a toilet brush.

Kitchen
Stainless Steel: Wipe with baking soda, rinse, then wipe with a clean damp cloth to polish.

Refrigerator: Leave a box or bowl in your fridge to absorb food orders.

Cups: Remove coffee and tea stains, sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and rub into the out the stain (can't wait to try this!).

Food Containers: To remove odor, rinse with hot water and baking soda. If the smell persists leave mixture in the container to soak overnight.

Pots & Pans: Help lift cooked-on foods by adding a good amount of baking soda, some dish soap, and hot water to the pan. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes (I leave it overnight), then scrub away.

Oven Cleaner: Cover bottom of your oven with baking soda about 1/4 inch high. Spray with water until baking soda is thoroughly damp. Remoisten mixture several times throughout the day and before bed. In the morning scoop it out with a rag or sponge and along with all the grime. Then rinse off any remaining white residue.

Dishwasher: Run a cycle in the dishwasher using baking soda instead of detergent to clean out the dishwasher.

Laundry
Laundry Booster: Brighten your whites naturally and remove odors in the wash by adding 1/2-1 cup of baking soda.

Clean & Green: Citrus Disinfectant

Clean & Green recipes are back! During the next few weeks I'll be sharing some inexpensive ways to make your own homemade cleaning products. Saying goodbye to chemical cleaners won't be as hard as you think. Not only will you save money but the air your family breathes will be cleaner too. Opening up the windows in your house for an hour or more once a week will also help your indoor air quality.
I'm making this Citrus Disinfectant today for the first time and I can't wait to try it!

Here's what you'll need:
Peel from 1 orange, grapefruit, lemon, or lime
3 cups white vinegar
Clean quart jar with lid
Clean 32 ounce spray bottle

Combine the citrus peel and vinegar in the quart jar. Fasten the lid on the jar and store the mixture for 2 weeks giving it an occasional shake.
When 2 weeks are up remove the peel, strain the vinegar, and return it to the jar.
To use as a spray cleaner pour 1 cup of the vinegar into your spray bottle and fill with water.
To clean linoleum floors add 1 cup mixture to 2 gallons of water.

For anyone new to cleaning without chemicals here's a list of the basics supplies most of the recipes shared will need, you may already have most of these on hand.

White Vinegar (I like to purchase this by the gallon at Walmart)
Borax
Baking Soda (Costco carries this in a bulk size)
Rubbing Alcohol
Baby Oil
Lemons
Clean Spray Bottles

Here are the other cleaning recipes I've shared if you missed them:

Clean & Green: Basic Window & Glass Cleaner

Here is a recipe for a very simple window and glass cleaner that will give you a professional shine!

1/2 Cup White Vinegar
2/3 Gallon Water
1 Clean Gallon Container
1 Clean 32-ounce Spray Bottle

Mix ingredients together in the gallon container
Fill the spray bottle, spray on windows and glass as needed
Dry glass with crumpled newspaper or diaper clothes for a lint free shine
Remaining cleaner can be saved and used later

You can also make a smaller batch in a quart size spray bottle by mixing 1/4 Cup vinegar with enough water to fill the container. I also like to use a little white vinegar to shine up the chrome on the faucets in our house.

Clean & Green: Homemade Fabric Softener

Here's a very simple recipe for homemade fabric softener.

1/4 Cup Baking Soda
1/2 Cup White Vingar

Fill your machine with water
Add the baking soda then clothing
During the final rinse cycle add the vinegar (pour into the softener dispenser if your machine has one)

If you have a front loading machine like I do poor your detergent into the front of the machine with the clothes and then put the baking soda into the tray where you'd normally put the detergent and then follow step 3)

Save Money Cleaning: Lemon Microwave Cleaner

Each Thursday I'll be sharing with you a thrifty tip for keeping your home clean and green! To keep your microwave looking and smelling fresh follow this simple recipe!

1.5 Cups Water
3 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
3 Tablespoons baking soda OR
2 cups white vinegar

Combine water, lemon juice, and baking soda (or substitute white vinegar) in a microwave safe bowl (no plastic!). Cook uncovered for 5 minutes. Carefully remove bowl using pot holders, it will be very HOT. Then simply wipe out your microwave using a dish towel! No elbow grease needed, let your microwave do all the work!

Or simplify this even more by just cutting a lemon in half, throw it in a bowl of water and let that cook for 3-5 minutes before wiping out your microwave.

If you plan to follow me in this series you should have almost everything already on hand, here are the basic ingredients if you want to check your supplies.
White Vinegar
Borax
Baking Soda
Rubbing Alcohol
Baby Oil
Spray Bottles
As my household cleaning items run out I'll be saving the bottles and spray triggers, cleaning them out really well, and then reusing them for homemade cleaners.
